Ashley Williams: 'Swansea City let Garry Monk down'

Swansea City captain Ashley Williams admits that his side let downformer manager Garry Monk, and dedicates their performance against Manchester City to the 36-year-old.

Swansea City captain Ashley Williams has suggested that his side let former manager Garry Monk down, following the 36-year-old's sacking on Wednesday.

Williams was speaking after his side's 2-1 defeat by Manchester City this afternoon, in which Kelechi Iheanacho netted a late winner for Manuel Pellegrini's side, and the Wales international has dedicated his team's performance to the former Swans defender.

"It's disappointing and frustrating to come away with nothing, I think we can take heart from the performance," Williams told Sky Sports News. "We said before the game that we wanted to do it for Garry Monk, the gaffer, and I think we did that, we performed well.

"We've been letting ourselves down and the club down of late, not to mention Garry, so we wanted to perform for the fans that come up and for the club the pay us. I think the performance was a lot better.

"We let [Monk] down, we're fully aware of that, and we've got to take responsibility for that. It doesn't matter who's the manager, we've gotta go on the pitch and play, so it's about us pulling together and doing our best for the club."

Swansea - who are currently 15th in the Premier League table - will take on West Ham United in their next fixture on December 20.
