QPR made a bright start to the match, with Junior Hoilett looking dangerous in the opening 10 minutes.
However, it was the visitors who took the lead, Steven Fletcher grabbing his first goal in five games for the Black Cats.
Sunderland's lead lasted 10 minutes, with Loic Remy guiding the ball past Simon Mignolet from close range after Andros Townsend fired it in towards goal.
The French striker had two more chances before half time, but could not put Harry Redknapp's side in front before the break.

Sunderland had the majority of the possession in the opening minutes of the second half, but Robert Green was rarely troubled in the QPR goal.
Townsend had his ball into the box blocked, before picking it up around 30 yards out and striking it on the half-volley, catching out Mignolet and giving the home side the lead.
Jermaine Jenas came off the bench to score the home side's third goal, sealing the win for QPR with his first Premier League goal since 2009.
The win is not enough to lift QPR off the bottom of the table, but it leaves them just four points from safety, while Sunderland remain 14th.
