Italian football team scores eight own goals in single game

A cup match in Italy has come under scrutiny after one of the teams involved scored eight own goals in the final 10 minutes of the game.

The Coppa Sicilia fixture between Borgata Terrenove and Bagheria, who ply their trade in the eighth tier of Italian league football, was poised at 4-3, before two quick-fire goals from Borgata took the score to 6-3.

Three Bagheria players then went on to score eight own goals between them before the full-time whistle, which meant that Borgata, having officially won the game 14-3, went through to the next round on goal difference ahead of a third team, Partinicaudace.

The FIGC regional president, Sandro Morgana, said of the game: "I will personally inform our prosecutors about this and they will look into the case and establish which sanctions should apply."

Italian football has suffered several match-fixing scandals in recent years.
