Roy Hodgson: 'England were more composed'

England manager Roy Hodgson praises his side following their 2-1 victory over Italy in tonight's friendly.

England manager Roy Hodgson has praised his side following their 2-1 victory over Italy in tonight's friendly.

The former Liverpool boss hailed his midfield, pointing out that his team looked more composed than they did during Euro 2012.

"It is not about systems it is about players. Three in midfield passed very well, our wide men worked very hard but everyone played their part," he said.

"I don't think there was a great difference between what we did in the Euros and what we did tonight. Perhaps we just played with that little bit more composure."

Hodgson also singled out debutant Tom Cleverley for praise, describing the Manchester United man as "a great player".

He added: "We know Tom Cleverley is a great player, a very important player for Manchester United, who were unlucky to lose him for so long last season.

"He has been playing for GB, playing very well for GB and it was great for him to be able to make his England debut tonight."

Goals from Phil Jagielka and Jermain Defoe secured a win for England, with Italy's reply coming from Daniele De Rossi.
