Sam Winnall, 24, ready to take responsibility at Barnsley

Sam Winnall, 24, wants to take responsibility at Barnsley after he is left one of the oldest players in the squad.

Sam Winnall has said that he is aiming to shoulder responsibility and look after Barnsley's youngsters as the 24-year-old has been left one of the oldest players at the club.

Just five players in the squad, including Winnall, are 24 or over, with only Lewin Nyatanga being over the age of 25.

"That's kind of the way I like it," Winnall told the Yorkshire Post. "I like being a senior player in the dressing room and being a leader rather than someone being led.

"I am willing to take on as much responsibility as needs be. That is when I feel as if I play my best football.

"I'm more than happy to do that and it is something I take a lot of pride in, in having that responsibility. I get on really well with the gaffer [Lee Johnson] and we talk quite often in terms of what we think and bounce ideas off each other."

Winnall scored 13 goals in an injury-ravaged season at Oakwell, after Barnsley snapped him up in the summer for £250,000 following an impressive campaign at Scunthorpe that saw him pick up the 2013-14 League Two Golden Boot.
