Diego Godin signs new Atletico Madrid deal

Atletico Madrid central defender Diego Godin extends his contract with the Spanish club until June 2019.

Uruguay centre-back Diego Godin has signed a new long-term contract at Atletico Madrid.

The 29-year-old, who joined Atletico from Villarreal in 2010, has developed into one of the finest central defenders in European football during his time at the Vicente Calderon.

Manchester United and Manchester City have previously been credited with an interest, but such speculation has now been ended.

Godin, whose new deal will run until the summer of 2019, revealed his delight at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

"I'm very happy to have renewed with Atletico. I want to thank the club, my teammates and the coaching staff," said Godin.

"I have made a decision with my heart, for the love shown by the people everyday. The club has made a great effort so I can stay here. I never doubted it. I always wanted to stay."

Godin played a key role in Atletico's La Liga title success in the 2013-14 season.
