How West Ham United players including Lucas Paqueta, Declan Rice fared on international duty

Sports Mole rounds up which West Ham United players were in action for their respective nations during September's international break.

David Moyes will welcome back the 11 first-team players to his West Ham United squad who have been representing their country during September's international break.

Ten Hammers players were spread out across Europe, while Michail Antonio travelled to the United States for a solitary fixture with Jamaica.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up which West Ham players were in action for their respective nations and how they fared on international duty.

England: Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen

September 26: England 3-3 Germany – UEFA Nations League (Wembley Stadium, London)

Regarded as one of the first names on Gareth Southgate's teamsheet for England, Declan Rice completed the full 90 minutes in both of their final two Nations League matches against Italy and Germany, operating in centre-midfield alongside Jude Bellingham.

However, Rice and co were unable to avoid relegation to League B and they ended their group campaign without a win from six matches.

Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen was an unused substitute in the defeat to Italy and was then not named in the matchday squad against Germany – the attacker won all four of his previous caps for the Three Lions in June.

Italy: Gianluca Scamacca, Emerson Palmieri

September 26: Hungary 0-2 Italy – UEFA Nations League (Puskas Arena, Budapest)

Gianluca Scamacca started just his fourth international game for Italy and played for 63 minutes in the slender win over England, before coming off the bench for the final 18 minutes against Hungary.

The 23-year-old striker is yet to score or provide an assist for the Azzurri, but nevertheless Roberto Mancini's men ended their Nations League campaign strongly with two victories to help them leapfrog Hungary at the summit of League A Group 3 and progress to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Emerson Palmieri was brought on in the 89th minute against England, but he was not named Italy's matchday squad for the win over Hungary.

Czech Republic: Vladimir Coufal, Tomas Soucek

Results:
September 24: Czech Republic 0-4 Portugal – UEFA Nations League (Sinobo Stadium, Prague)
September 27: Switzerland 2-1 Czech Republic – UEFA Nations League AFG Arena, St Gallen)

Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal both started in the Czech Republic's final two Nations League matches, but they were unable to prevent their country from relegation to League B.

The Czechs were presented with an opportunity to draw themselves level in the clash with Switzerland when they were awarded a penalty just after the hour mark, but Soucek missed from 12 yards just three days after Patrick Schick failed to convert his spot kick against Portugal.

While Soucek played for 167 minutes across both matches while wearing the captain's armband in centre-midfield, Coufal completed the full 90 minutes in both fixtures as a right wing-back.

Germany: Thilo Kehrer

Results:
September 23: Germany 0-1 Hungary – UEFA Nations League (Red Bull Arena, Leipzig)
September 26: England 3-3 Germany – UEFA Nations League (Wembley Stadium, London)

Summer signing Thilo Kehrer operated as a right-back in both of Germany's final two Nations League fixtures, earning his 21st and 22nd international caps against Hungary and England respectively.

The 26-year-old came off the bench for the second half in the defeat against Hungary, before playing the full 90 minutes at Wembley, winning four of his six tackles and making four clearances in the thrilling six-goal draw with England.

France: Alphonse Areola

Results:
September 22: France 2-0 Austria – UEFA Nations League (Stade de France, Paris)
September 25: Denmark 2-0 France – UEFA Nations League (Parken Stadium, Copenhagen)

Alphonse Areola earned his fourth and fifth caps for France, who experienced a mixed set of results to end their underwhelming Nations League campaign third in League A Group 1 with only five points from six games, eight points behind group winners Croatia and just one above relegated Austria at the bottom.

Against Austria, the 29-year-old made his first international appearance since June 2019 when he replaced the injured Mike Maignan at half time, and he went on to keep a clean sheet – his third for the national team – in their 2-0 victory.

Areola was then handed a start between the sticks against Denmark, but he was unable the keep the ball out of the net as the Danes ran out 2-0 winners.

Brazil: Lucas Paqueta

Results:
September 23: Brazil 3-0 Ghana – Friendly (Stade Oceane, La Havre)
September 27: Brazil 5-1 Tunisia – Friendly (Parc des Princes, Paris)

West Ham's club-record signing Lucas Paqueta was handed a start for Brazil in both of their friendly encounters this month, although the attacking midfielder was unable to contribute to any of their eight goals scored.

The 25-year-old played for 79 minutes as a deep-lying midfielder against Ghana before he was given more licence to roam forward in the first half against 10-man Tunisia.

Ivory Coast: Maxwel Cornet

Results:
September 24: Ivory Coast 2-1 Togo – Friendly (Stade Robert Diochon, Le Petit-Quevilly)
September 27: Ivory Coast 3-1 Guinea – Friendly (Stade de la Licorne, Amiens)

Maxwel Cornet earned his 30th international cap in Ivory Coast's win over Togo and he operated as a right wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation, linking up with Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha down the right flank. However, the 26-year-old was an unused substitute against Guinea.

Jamaica: Michail Antonio

Result:
September 28: Jamaica 0-3 Argentina – Friendly (Red Bull Arena, New Jersey)

Michail Antonio is still searching for his first victory in Jamaica colours after they were beaten by Argentina in the United States, with Lionel Messi scoring a brace within the final five minutes of the contest.

The 32-year-old Hammers forward was handed a start in attack and played for 87 minutes, but he and his teammates were unable to register a single shot on target.
