Head coach Steve Cooper acknowledges that Saturday's 1-0 victory over Liverpool shows that Nottingham Forest can compete in the Premier League.

Head coach Steve Cooper is hopeful that Nottingham Forest are ready to turn a corner after beating Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

Forest went into the game with the Merseyside giants sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table and having failed to win any of their last nine league matches.

However, last season's Championship playoff winners prevailed by a 1-0 scoreline at the City Ground, former Liverpool youngster Taiwo Awoniyi netting the only goal of the game shortly after half time.

As well as having chances to double their lead, Forest had to ride their luck at time as Liverpool failed to make the most of a number of openings, particularly through Virgil van Dijk from set pieces.

Nevertheless, a combination of poor decision-making, bad luck and an outstanding late save from Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson extended Liverpool's winless away record in the top flight this season to five matches.

Furthermore, Forest have now gone six matches without losing a Premier League home game versus Liverpool, that streak spread over three decades.

After the game, Cooper talked up what could potentially prove to be a pivotal moment in Forest's season, the club now only sitting in the relegation zone on goal difference.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Cooper said: "Obviously it feels great, there are a few things about the win which are really important; one, we really needed a win because we've been on a poor run.

"It is a very important win for the club and the city, there is a nice history about the fixture and definitely a game fans looked forward and I know for us to win the game is important for many generations. And going forward it is a good reference point for us to show we can compete at this level and create chances."

"This is not the end, this has got to be a part of the start. We get back in on Monday and work even harder. We've been on a difficult run but, I told the boys, I've not seen them hide, shy away or sulk. I've seen the opposite. That's given me reassurance.

"This is a big win but only a win. We've got to build on that and carry on."

Forest now have over a week until they play their next fixture with a trip to the Emirates Stadium to play Arsenal coming on October 30.
