On this day: Quickfire Giuseppe Rossi hat-trick sinks Juventus

Two years ago today, Giuseppe Rossi scored a 14-minute hat-trick as Fiorentina recovered from two goals down to beat champions Juventus.

While Giuseppe Rossi's ability has never been in doubt, his luck when it comes to avoiding serious injuries has left a lot to be desired.

Having failed to make the grade at Manchester United, the pint-sized centre-forward moved to Villarreal, where he shone. Yet, it was in Western Spain where he would damage his cruciate ligament - not once, but twice.

He made the switch to Fiorentina in the winter of 2013 still injured and has since suffered another serious problem to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

However, in between those setbacks there have been some bright moments for the striker in Florence, with perhaps the biggest of them all occurring two years ago today when Juventus made the trip to the Stadio Artemio Franchi - a stadium where they had not lost in 15 years.

For all intents and purposes, it seemed that the visiting champions would extend that run when the referee blew for the break, given that they headed back to the dressing room with a 2-0 lead.

Carlos Tevez put them in front from the penalty spot in the 37th minute and then with their very next attack, Paul Pogba capitalised on a defensive error to volley in from close range. Incidentally, like Rossi, Juve's goalscorers had spent part of their careers at Old Trafford.

Rather than accept their fate, the home side, spearheaded by Rossi, produced an unexpected second-half comeback.

The Italian frontman got them back into contention with 66 minutes played, when just as Tevez had done earlier in the contest, he kept his cool from the penalty spot. He then restored parity 10 minutes later when his shot from the edge of the area got the better of Gianluigi Buffon.

More was to come in the 78th minute, although on this occasion it was Spanish winger Joaquin that found the net as Fiorentina took the lead when he slotted in after being picked out by Borja Valero.

The morning headlines, though, would belong to Rossi, who completed what was a 14-minute hat-trick to seal the three points for his side and ensure that the match ball would be heading home with him.

Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado sped away on the counter-attack and having squared a pass for Rossi, the frontman bent a left-footed shot beyond the reach of Buffon at full stretch.

Speaking after his heroics, Rossi told Sky Sport Italia: "They are three very important goals, but the team had an incredible performance in the second half.

"We reacted so well, we all wanted to fight back and it is down to everyone that we achieved it. Montella (head coach) told us to give more, as we got a bit scared after the first goal. We listened to him and did what the coach wanted. We're so happy, this team is built to win. There is great talent on the pitch and in the stands, so we know after this performance that we can challenge anyone."
