Wigan Athletic back in top two of League One with late win at Bradford City

A 91st-minute strike from Michael Jacobs gives Wigan Athletic a 1-0 win over Bradford City in Wednesday night's League One clash at the Northern Commercials Stadium.

Michael Jacobs's 91st-minute strike has given Wigan Athletic a 1-0 win over Bradford City in Wednesday night's League One clash at the Northern Commercials Stadium.

The sides looked set for a goalless draw in Yorkshire, but the 26-year-old's injury-time finish into the bottom-left corner of the Bantams' net proved the difference between the teams.

The Latics had the better of the first half as they registered eight chances, the best of which saw James Vaughan clip the outside of the post following Nick Powell's cross into the area.

Bradford's only effort in the opening 45 minutes came late in the half, Tony McMahon volleying high over the bar and into the stands.

The hosts began the second period brightly, with Shay McCartan heading wide after connecting with McMahon's cross.

However, Paul Cook's charges soon got into their stride and weighed in with a number of opportunities, albeit without finding the back of the net.

Nonetheless, Wigan's perseverance paid off when Will Grigg's flick sent Jacobs through on goal, and the winger made no mistake with a neat finish past goalkeeper Colin Doyle.

The result sees the Latics edge back into the top two of the table, while Bradford remain 10th in the standings.

BRADFORD CITY (4-1-4-1): Doyle; Tony, Kilgallon, Knight-Percival, Robinson; Vincelot; Lund, Dieng (Law 87'), Guy, Gilliead (Brunker 71'); McCartan (Poleon 82')

WIGAN ATHLETIC (4-2-3-1): Walton; Byrne, Dunkley, Burn, Elder; Powell (Grigg 58'), Morsy; Massey (Colclough 72'), Power, Jacobs; Vaughan (Cole 82')
