Saturday's League One predictions including Portsmouth vs. Oxford United

Sports Mole provides score predictions and previews for all of today's League One fixtures, including Portsmouth vs. Oxford United.

Bolton vs. Cambridge (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Both sides will be aiming to bounce back from defeat when Bolton Wanderers host Cambridge United in League One on Saturday.

Bolton lost 1-0 away to Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening, while Cambridge were defeated by the same scoreline away to Stevenage.

We say: Bolton Wanderers 1-0 Cambridge United

Bolton appear to be struggling for goals since Charles's knee injury, while Cambridge have failed to score in both matches under Corr's caretaker management.

Bolton edged it 2-1 when these sides met last month, and we are predicting another narrow victory for the host ahead of a crucial promotion clash against Barnsley in midweek.

Carlisle vs. Reading (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Reading manager Ruben Selles reacts on January 23, 2024© Reuters

League One basement side Carlisle United will have the chance to claim a second straight victory when play host to Reading on Saturday.

The Royals, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back after they fell to a 3-2 defeat to Shrewsbury Town last weekend.

We say: Carlisle United 1-2 Reading

Although Carlisle claimed all three points in Tuesday's away clash with Burton, they have lost each of their last four home matches, and after falling to a 5-1 defeat to Reading in the reverse fixture, we think the Cumbrians will come up short in Saturday's home outing.

Cheltenham vs. Burton Albion (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Two sides looking to avoid relegation come together on Saturday as Burton Albion travel to Whaddon Road to face Cheltenham Town.

Cheltenham are currently 21st and three points from safety, whilst Burton are five points clear of the relegation zone heading into this game.

We say: Cheltenham Town 0-1 Burton Albion

Burton Albion have not lost to Cheltenham Town in any competition since November 2012 and have won five in this time, which will leave them confident of securing all three points.

Neither side have been prolific in front of goal this season, scoring 28 and 29 respectively, and we doubt this one will provide many goals either.

Derby vs. Port Vale (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Derby County will look to bounce back from consecutive defeats when they play host to Port Vale in Saturday's League One contest.

Meanwhile, the relegation-threatened visitors will be desperate to record their first victory since the end of December.

We say: Derby County 2-0 Port Vale

Derby may enter Saturday's contest off the back of consecutive defeats, but we think they will do enough to get the better of a Port Vale side that has lost each of their last four away matches.

Fleetwood vs. Wigan (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to preserve any hopes of jumping out of the relegation zone at the bottom end of the League One table, Fleetwood Town will play host to Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Charlie Adam's side sit 23rd with an eight-point gap to safety, while their visitors have climbed up to 13th spot thanks to an upturn in form in recent weeks.

We say: Fleetwood Town 1-2 Wigan Athletic

Fleetwood Town need victories if they are to stand a chance of avoiding relegation this season, but the visitors boast more quality throughout their ranks, and we back Maloney's men to extend their pleasing run in pursuit of a top-half place.

Leyton Orient vs. Bristol Rovers (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Two sides looking to make the playoff spots at the end of the season come together on Saturday afternoon as Leyton Orient host Bristol Rovers at Brisbane Road.

The hosts returned to winning ways at home last time out after losing in front of their own fans for the first time in 2024 the week prior, while Bristol Rovers have managed just one away win in the new year.

We say: Leyton Orient 2-1 Bristol Rovers

Leyton Orient have been strong at home in 2024, succumbing to just one loss at Brisbane Road since the turn of the year. While the O's have not enjoyed much success against Bristol Rovers in recent years, we believe they will continue their strong home form and win this one.

Neither side have endured many goalless games in recent weeks and so we believe both teams will manage to get on the scoresheet during this game.

Lincoln vs. Stevenage (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Playoff-chasers Lincoln City and Stevenage lock horns in League One at the LNER Stadion on Saturday afternoon.

Stevenage are currently in the ascendancy, occupying the final playoff spot, while Lincoln are quite a distance back, but the hosts' excellent recent form means they cannot be written off yet.

We say: Lincoln City 2-0 Stevenage

Few professional sides in England can boast as good a record as Lincoln over the past month, as they have kept their playoff hopes alive with a brilliant run, and another win here against a direct promotion rival would be huge.

While home comforts have provided Stevenage with two big wins in the past week, they have only won two of their last seven on the road, losing four, and this will be a challenge against a confident Lincoln side.

Northampton vs. Charlton (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Northampton Town manager Jon Brady pictured in May 2022© Reuters

Northampton Town will attempt to extend their unbeaten run to four matches when they welcome Charlton Athletic to Sixfields on Saturday.

The visitors, meanwhile, will have the chance to claim a second straight win after taking all three points off Derby County in midweek.

We say: Northampton Town 1-1 Charlton Athletic

Charlton would have taken a lot of confidence from Tuesday's win over Derby, but we think they may have to settle for a draw against a Northampton side that has lost just one of their last seven home league matches.

Peterborough vs. Exeter (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Peterborough United's manager Darren Ferguson reacts on January 7, 2024© Reuters

Aiming to keep the sizeable playoff-chasing pack at bay, Peterborough United will do battle with relegation-threatened Exeter City at Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday afternoon in League One.

The Posh were narrow winners at Cambridge United last time out, while the Grecians were forced to share the spoils with Fleetwood Town at St James Park.

We say: Peterborough United 2-0 Exeter City

Back-to-back away wins have allowed Peterborough to click into their playoff-clinching rhythm once again, meaning that the Posh should be confident of earning three points on Saturday.

Exeter have only managed an uninspiring point against strugglers Fleetwood during their last three matches, and we believe that the Grecians' poor form will continue at Weston Homes Stadium.

Portsmouth vs. Oxford Utd (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Portsmouth will attempt to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches when they welcome Oxford United to Fratton Park on Saturday.

While the hosts are currently leading the way in League One, the U's are sitting just outside the playoffs in seventh place.

We say: Portsmouth 2-2 Oxford United

Although Oxford have struggled for wins in recent times, they have seen five of their last seven matches finish all square, and with their previous three meetings with Portsmouth all ending in draws, we think the U's may do enough to take a point off the league leaders.

Shrewsbury vs. Blackpool (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Blackpool manager Neil Critchley before the match on January 7, 2024© Reuters

Blackpool will be bidding to bounce back from their defeat at Leyton Orient when they resume their League One campaign with a trip to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors are currently ninth in the League One table, six points off the playoffs, while Shrewsbury occupy 18th, only five points ahead of the relegation zone.

We say: Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Blackpool

Both teams are set to be missing some important players for this match, and it is a contest that could go either way, with all three scores more than possible. Blackpool's away form this season has been disappointing, so we are struggling to back them and have ultimately settled on a low-scoring draw.

Wycombe vs. Barnsley (Saturday, 3.00pm)

A general shot of a football from May 2022© Reuters

Aiming to ramp up their pursuit of the top two in the League One table, Barnsley will travel to Adams Park to take on Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Thanks to a fine run of form, the Reds only trail the automatic promotion spots by three points with games in hand on the sides above them, while their hosts climbed to 14th spot with a midweek victory.

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 1-2 Barnsley

Barnsley are prone to winning narrowly in tight games in recent months, and we envisage another three-point haul on Saturday, with the hosts bound to trouble them in a tough trip but Collins's men boasting the quality and momentum to get over the line again.
