How Barcelona could line up against Juventus

Sports Mole looks at how Barcelona could line up for Wednesday's Champions League showdown with Juventus in Turin.

The big matches continue to come thick and fast for Barcelona as they look to bounce back from defeat in El Clasico when facing Juventus in Champions League Group G on Wednesday night.

The trip to Turin - a repeat of the 2015 final - comes just four days after Ronald Koeman's side were beaten 3-1 at home by their bitterest rivals, leaving them with only one point from their last three domestic outings.

Barcelona were much more convincing in their opening Champions League group game, though, with five different players getting on the scoresheet in a comfortable win over Ferencvaros.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Koeman could set his side up for Wednesday showdown.

Possible BAR XI vs. JUV

Out: Gerard Pique (suspended), Philippe Coutinho (hamstring), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (match fitness), Samuel Umtiti (match fitness)

Barcelona's struggles at the moment are perhaps best summed up by their likely XI for this match - far from the star-studded team sheet we are used to seeing from the five-time European champions.

That is particularly true in defence, where Koeman's options were further depleted by Gerard Pique's red card against Ferencvaros on matchday one.

Pique's suspension, coupled with Samuel Umtiti's continued absence through injury, means that Ronald Araujo is likely to partner Clement Lenglet at the heart of the defence.

Former Juventus goalkeeper Neto is once again expected to start in goal as Marc-Andre ter Stegen misses out through injury, while summer signing Sergino Dest and Jordi Alba make up the likely back five.

Ter Stegen, Alba, Pique, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi were all in the Barca team that beat Juventus in the 2015 final, yet they look much less of a force right now and of that quintet only two could start if Koeman chooses Frenkie de Jong and Miralem Pjanic - a summer arrival from Juve - in the middle of the park.

There is still a sprinkling of stardust in the form of Messi, though, who has been denied a latest showdown with Cristiano Ronaldo due to the Juve forward's positive coronavirus test.

Life without Messi does not look to be too far away for Barcelona, but in Ansu Fati they appear to have another star for the future, with the youngster scoring again at the weekend against Real Madrid.

Philippe Coutinho played the full 90 minutes of that Clasico, but Barcelona revealed on Sunday that he has picked up a hamstring injury which will rule him out of this match.
