Arsenal team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Liverpool

Sports Mole rounds up Arsenal's latest injury and suspension news ahead of their second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

Arsenal are scheduled to return to action on Thursday evening for the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool.

Despite injuries and an early red card, achieving a goalless draw at Anfield was regarded as a huge success, giving the Gunners some momentum ahead of the reverse fixture.

However, a combination of those previous factors and coronavirus led to Sunday's Premier League clash with North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur being postponed, leaving Mikel Arteta with numerous selection dilemmas ahead of this match.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up all of Arsenal's latest injury and suspension news ahead of welcoming the Merseyside giants to the Emirates Stadium.

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Calf
Possible return date: January 20 (vs. Liverpool)

Tomiyasu is currently struggling with a calf issue, although the extra four days of recovery can only benefit him ahead of a potential return in this match.

Emile Smith Rowe

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Groin
Possible return date: January 20 (vs. Liverpool)

The same applies to Smith Rowe. There was every indication that the playmaker was no more than 50-50 to feature against Spurs before it was postponed, but the Englishman may feature in the squad for this contest.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Status: Out
Type of injury: Africa Cup of Nations
Possible return date: Unknown

Arsenal remain without Aubameyang due to his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Thomas Partey

Status: Out
Type of injury: Africa Cup of Nations
Possible return date: Unknown

Like with Aubameyang, the Gunners are not able to call upon Partey due to his participation at the tournament in Africa.

Mohamed Elneny

Status: Out
Type of injury: Africa Cup of Nations
Possible return date: Unknown

The same also applies with Elneny, who is away representing Egypt when his long-term future at Arsenal remains very much in the air.

Nicolas Pepe

Status: Out
Type of injury: Africa Cup of Nations
Possible return date: Unknown

Given Arsenal's issues in the final third, Pep may have been in a position to start, but the winger is away with Ivory Coast.

Martin Odegaard

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Coronavirus
Possible return date: January 20 (vs. Liverpool)

While there is no guarantee that Odegaard will be back in contention for Thursday's game, the Norwegian will be eligible to return to training later this week providing that he records two negative coronavirus tests.

Bukayo Saka

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Fatigue
Possible return date: January 20 (vs. Liverpool)

While it was suggested that Saka picked up a minor muscle injury during the closing stages of the first leg, it was later put down to fatigue, and an extra four days of recovery should enable him to feature on Thursday.

Cedric Soares

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Hip
Possible return date: January 20 (vs. Liverpool)

Cedric would have been motivated to make an impression given Arsenal's selection issues, but a hip injury during the early stages of the first leg has prevented him from doing just that. As it stands, it appears unlikely that he will play any part at the Emirates Stadium.

Calum Chambers

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Knock
Possible return date: January 20 (vs. Liverpool)

Chambers falls into the same bracket as Cedric, even though there remains a chance that he could leave the club. The versatile Englishman picked up a knock in the first leg and will continue to be assessed.

Sead Kolasinac

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: January 20 (vs. Liverpool)

Kolasinac will almost certainly depart the Gunners at some stage this month, but he has been required to feature in the squad as of late. However, he will first have to shake off a hamstring issue to come into contention for this contest.

ARSENAL'S SUSPENSION LIST

Granit Xhaka

Status: Out
Possible return date: February 10 (vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers)

The cancellation of Sunday's game still leaves Xhaka with a two-match ban. Combined with Arsenal's early exit from the FA Cup, it now appears that the Swiss will not return until the second week in February.
