Referee Stuart Atwell demoted from Premier League

Referee Stuart Atwell is withdrawn from the Premier League by mutual consent after a number of errors during matches this season.

Referee Stuart Atwell has been withdrawn from the Premier League by mutual consent based on his performances this season.

The 29-year-old, who has not refereed a top flight match since New Year's Day, will now officiate games at a lower level, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited confirmed.

"Throughout his career in the Select Group Stuart has demonstrated great courage and mental strength in responding to the challenges that he has faced," said PGMOL general manager Mike Riley.

"He has shown many of the attributes of a top flight official but the Premier League is an exacting standard with huge demands. It is imperative that PGMOL deliver the best officiating possible to the English game at all levels.

"Stuart has a high level of maturity and responsibility and I'm convinced that he has a long-term future as a referee at the very highest level. PGMOL sincerely hopes to be welcoming Stuart back to the Select Group in the future."

Atwell has also been used by UEFA this season.
