The Frenchman suffered the injury during the Magpies' 2-1 win against Everton on Saturday, November 5.
"He will have an operation this week, probably. That could be a while," said manager Alan Pardew.
Marveaux moved to the Sports Direct Arena from Rennes over the summer.
