England midfielder Michael Carrick says that he does not want to be handed a place in Roy Hodgson's starting XI, he just wants a fair chance of earning it.

Michael Carrick has claimed that he doesn't expect to be handed a place in the England starting lineup, but just wants a "fair chance".

Carrick could be included in Roy Hodgson's starting XI to face Moldova in a World Cup qualifier tomorrow, but it would only be the midfielder's sixth competitive game for England, despite making his debut over 10 years ago.

The 31-year-old was cast into international exile after refusing to be a bit-part player during Euro 2012, but was recalled to the squad for the friendly against Italy last month.

"I am not different or any more special than the rest of the lads," said Carrick.

"I don't need assurances or guarantees of any kind, just a fair chance. If I am playing well then I want to get a chance. If I'm not, then fair enough.

"Anyone who knows me knows my ego is not big enough to think I should be here and expect to play. That's the manager's choice. It's just up to me to stay in the squad for starters and then hopefully push to get a place in the team."

Carrick has made 23 appearances for England overall.
