Manchester United have taken all three points from a 2-0 victory over Otelul Galati in Bucharest.
United dominated possession in the first half but failed to translate this to the scoresheet. A last-minute attempt from Michael Carrick proved too high, leaving the half goalless.
The only goal of the game came a few minutes after the hour as Wayne Rooney capitalised on a penalty awarded following a Sergiu Costin handball. However, the Red Devils soon found themselves a man down as Nemanja Vidic was dismissed for a challenge on Gabriel Giurgiu.
Rooney scored again from a second penalty shortly before the final whistle after a foul by Liviu Antal.
The Mancunians now have five points, two points behind first-placed Benfica.
The Romanian side will visit Old Trafford for the second Group C tie on Wednesday, November 2.
