Edin Dzeko hails "important" victory against Newcastle United

Edin Dzeko says that Manchester City deserved to win their first Premier League match of the season against Newcastle United.

Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko has paid tribute to his teammates following their 2-0 win against Newcastle United this afternoon.

The Citizens got their title defence off to the perfect start by picking up three points in their opening Premier League match of the season thanks to goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

"It's always good and important to start with a win in a new season," he told Manchester City's official website.

"We knew it would be a tough but we gave everything – we started from the first minute, being aggressive and trying to score and I think we deserved the win.

"I'm very proud that we managed to win this game. First games can be tough but we did it again and I want to thank our fans because I thought they were brilliant today, once again."

Man City will host Liverpool in their next league match on August 25.
