Mark Lawrenson: 'I feel sorry for Rickie Lambert'

Ex-Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson admits that he has sympathy for striker Rickie Lambert after his departure from the club.

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has admitted that he has sympathy for Rickie Lambert after his exit from the club.

The England striker has joined West Bromwich Albion after spending just one season at Anfield, during which he netted only three times from 36 appearances.

Lawrenson has suggested that the move is beneficial both for the 33-year-old frontman and Liverpool.

"It's hard not to feel a little sorry for Lambert. When he arrived, he knew he wouldn't be playing on a regular basis. He knew he would be playing if and when, and if he scored a few he'd be keeping his place," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"It was a move Lambert was always going to make once he was aware of Liverpool's interest. But because of his size and shape, he needs regular football to stay fit.

"At least we are getting most of our money back on the player, and I always think that's acceptable."

Lambert joined Liverpool from Southampton in June 2014.
