Roy Hodgson has reportedly opted to demote Andy Carroll to the bench, with Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck starting up front for England's clash with Ukraine.

England manager Roy Hodgson has reportedly decided to drop Andy Carroll to pave the way for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The former West Bromwich Albion coach confirmed yesterday that the 26-year-old would return to the lineup after serving a two-match UEFA ban.

The 64-year-old had to demote either Danny Welbeck or Liverpool frontman Carroll to the bench but it appears that Hodgson has decided to reunite Rooney with his United teammate, according to Sky Sports News.

Meanwhile, it is understood that Theo Walcott will start on the bench with James Milner keeping his place.

Confirmation of the team is expected to be announced in around one hour's time.
