The visitors started the game the brighter of the two teams, with Francesco Lodi and Gonzalo Bergessio trying their luck in the opening seven minutes but in vain.
However, it was Siena who made the breakthrough at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and the goal came in the 10th minute.
Alessandro Rosina latched on to Francesco Valiani's pass and shot home from the centre of the Catania penalty box.

Catania had a good chance to restore parity when they were awarded a free kick in the 13th minute, but Pablo Alvarez failed to keep his attempt on target.
The visitors continued their search for the equaliser, with Bergessio, Amidu Salifu and Giovanni Marchese all trying their luck.
Siena, though, finished the first half the stronger of the two teams and could have even doubled their advantage had Emanuele Calaio's header from an Alessio Sestu delivery been on target in the 41st minute.
Catania were unlucky not to equalise in the 47th minute when Sergio Almiron's shot from inside the area came off the post, before Alejandro Gomez saw his attempt saved by Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo.

The visitors eventually made it 1-1 and the goal came in the 50th minute when Lucas Castro was released by Bergessio to slot home from close range.
Gomez could have made it 2-1 to Catania just before the hour mark when he took a shot from the left side of the box, but saw it saved.
The visitors eventually went ahead midway through the second half when Bergessio latched on to Lodi's pass and fired in from close range.
Bergessio wrapped up the points for Catania in the 82nd minute with his second goal of the afternoon, as he turned in Castro's headed pass into the Siena net.
