Manchester United want to speak to Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O'Neil about a role in a new coaching set-up at Old Trafford, according to a report.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in speaking to Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O'Neil about a role in a new coaching set-up at Old Trafford.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team are now in charge of the football department at the club, and there is currently a host of speculation surrounding the future of current manager Erik ten Hag.

A decision on Ten Hag's future is not expected to be made until the end of the campaign, but a number of managers, including England's Gareth Southgate and Brentford's Thomas Frank, are being linked with the role.

According to ESPN, Man United are also keen to speak to Wolves manager O'Neil, although the 40-year-old is not believed to be a target for the main job at Old Trafford.

The report claims that O'Neil is instead wanted in a coaching capacity, and the ex-midfielder has been made aware of the interest from the 20-time English champions.

O'Neil played for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers, Norwich City, Bristol City and Bolton Wanderers during a professional career which lasted 19 years.

The former midfielder started his coaching career with Liverpool Under-18s before becoming Bournemouth's manager in 2022, managing to keep the Cherries in the Premier League.

O'Neil was then appointed Wolves manager in August 2023, and a successful season to date has left the club in ninth position in the Premier League table.

The Englishman has a contract at Molineux until 2026, meaning that Man United would have to pay a compensation fee in order to bring him to Old Trafford.

Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag are currently Ten Hag's assistants at Man United, and the pair would leave alongside the current manager if a change occurred this summer.

Ten Hag is still believed to be confident of winning over Ratcliffe, as the Dutchman is bidding to lead the Red Devils to success in the FA Cup this season.

Man United are also still in the hunt for Champions League football for the 2024-25 campaign despite suffering 11 Premier League defeats during a difficult season.

The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League table, six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and nine from fourth-placed Aston Villa, who have played a game more.

Man United will be bidding to make it three straight wins in all competitions when they head to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday night.
