Giancarlo Gonzalez: 'Costa Rica have made history'

Giancarlo Gonzalez says that Costa Rica have made history at the World Cup following their exit from the competition at the quarter-final stage.

Costa Rica defender Giancarlo Gonzalez believes that his side have 'made history' at the World Cup, despite their quarter-final stage exit from the tournament.

Los Ticos were defeated on penalties by the Netherlands last night to signal the end of their dreams of reaching the final four.

The Central Americans won many supporters across the world during their campaign in Brazil, however, overcoming the odds to progress as winners from Group D, before seeing off Greece in the last 16.

"We wanted to surprise the world and Costa Rica too," Gonzalez is quoted as saying by FourFourTwo. "We wanted to make history and I feel we've achieved that with everything we've done.

"We've earned the support of the Brazilian fans, who ended up identifying with the way we play, and the backing of the fans who came all the way from home to watch us. They gave 100% in the stands and we put in the same effort on the pitch."

Costa Rica's previous best achievement at the World Cup was reaching the round of 16 at Italia '90.
