Aston Villa will be looking to end a 25-year streak when they play host to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Aston Villa will be looking to end a 25-year streak when they face Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Having spent much of the first half of the campaign in the bottom half of the Premier League standings, it appeared at one stage that Villa would have to settle for another year of consolidation.

However, Unai Emery has instigated a European charge since his arrival in November, Villa now sitting in sixth place and just nine points adrift of third.

The West Midlands outfit will be able to eat into that deficit this weekend when they play host to Newcastle, who currently sit best of the rest behind Arsenal and Manchester City.

Villa have remarkably emerged as the second-best performing side in the division since Emery's appointment, collecting 35 points from 17 games in charge.

The Spaniard has notably witnessed his team score in every single game, and he will become just the third manager in Premier League history to have their team net in their opening 18 games should they score versus the Magpies.

Only Mike Walker, in charge of Norwich City, in 1992 and Carlo Ancelotti during his early days at Chelsea 17 years later have posted such a return.

Nevertheless, Emery will be more concerned with ending a run which has lasted two-and-a-half decades and since the days of John Gregory.

Not since 1998 have Villa recorded five consecutive victories in the Premier League, beating Crystal Palace, Everton, West Ham United, Coventry City and Southampton.

With regards to this season, Villa have beat Bournemouth, Chelsea, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest, scoring nine goals in the process.

Ollie Watkins has stolen the headlines, scoring in nine of his last 11 appearances, yet Bertrand Traore could equal a streak which has lasted since 2000-01.

Back then, Julian Joachim netted in three substitute outings in a row, something which Traore could match having scored versus the Foxes and Forest.
