Dave Whelan "encouraged" by Roberto Martinez talks

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan says that he feels "encouraged" by discussions regarding Roberto Martinez's future.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has suggested that manager Roberto Martinez will remain at the club following two days of discussions with the Spaniard.

The businessman had initially claimed that Martinez would make a decision on his future today, but the deadline was delayed until early next week to give both parties more time.

While the FA Cup-winning manager has been heavily linked with the managerial vacancy at Everton, Whelan has not been made aware of any third party and has insisted that Martinez is concerned with the club's training facilities and youth development.

"I'm encouraged with what he's asked me, but I don't want to promise Roberto certain things that I cannot deliver on," Whelan told Sky Sports News. "In the last hour or so, I've had very good news on our application for planning. We want to get category one and Roberto's mad keen to get that.

"From the meetings that I've had with Roberto [interest from another club has] not come across at all, and what's come across is that he wants to build Wigan Athletic. I cannot see any other football club involved in this."

Martinez has been at the helm of the DW Stadium since 2009.
