Preview: Sutton United vs. Harrogate Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League Two clash between Sutton United and Harrogate Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Relegation-threatened Sutton United will try to end a five-game winless league run when they welcome Harrogate Town to Gander Green Lane on Tuesday.

The visitors, who occupy 11th place in the fourth tier, will be looking to continue their fine form after losing just one of their last 13 league games.

Match preview

Steve Morison is still searching for his first win as Sutton boss, having seen each of his first three games finish all square.

After drawing 2-2 in their home meeting with Barrow, Sutton went on to play out a 1-1 scoreline in consecutive away games against Mansfield Town and Walsall.

Craig Eastmond found the net in the 23rd minute to cancel out Walsall's opener in Saturday's contest, but with the U's unable to find a winner, they had to settle for a draw that extended their winless run to six competitive matches.

After winning four, drawing nine and losing 15 of their 28 league matches, Sutton are currently languishing in 23rd place with seven points separating them from safety.

Sutton will need to shore up their backline if they are to preserve their EFL status, having conceded 56 goals in 28 league matches to leave them with the worst defensive record in the division.

Meanwhile, Harrogate are hoping to go the whole month without defeat after taking seven points from a possible nine in their three January fixtures.

Simon Weaver's side began 2024 with a 2-2 draw against Mansfield, before they went on to record back-to-back victories against Doncaster and Forest Green Rovers.

The Sulphurites have had plenty of time to reflect upon their 2-0 victory over Forest Green on January 13, having seen their clash with Grimsby Town postponed due to a frozen pitch and their fixture against Newport County rescheduled due to the Welsh club's participation in the FA Cup.

Following a lengthy break, Harrogate will return to league action in 11th position with four points separating them from the top seven.

After losing their last six competitive meetings with Sutton, they are hoping to beat the U's for the first time since recording a 2-0 victory in the National League in September 2019.

Team News

Sutton are still unable to call upon the services of forward Harry Smith, who will serve the final game of a six-match suspension.

After featuring as a substitute in the club's last two matches, Omari Patrick is in contention to start against Harrogate on Tuesday.

Having scored two goals in his previous four competitive appearances, 29-year-old striker Lee Angol will continue to lead the line for the hosts.

As for the visitors, they are expected to be without the injured quartet of Mark Oxley, Lewis Thomas, Rod McDonald and Sam Folarin.

Weaver could be tempted to name an unchanged starting XI after seeing his side sweep past Forest Green in their most recent fixture.

Abraham Odoh will be looking to score in a third consecutive game when he lines up just behind Harrogate forward Jack Muldoon.

Sutton United possible starting lineup:
Bouzanis; Jackson, Kizzi, John, Hart; Eastmond, Lakin; Duke-McKenna, Beautyman, Patrick; Angol

Harrogate Town possible starting lineup:
Belshaw; Ramsay, O'Connor, Gibson, Foulds; Cornelius, Dooley; Thomson, Odoh, Daly; Muldoon

We say: Sutton United 1-1 Harrogate Town

Sutton will be desperate to end their wait for a win in Tuesday's fixture against Harrogate, but we think that they will have to settle for a fourth consecutive draw, with their opponents currently enjoying a three-game unbeaten away run.
