Harry Redknapp admits that he can't fathom why the England players can't wear poppies on their shirts if they're permitted to display them on black armbands.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has blasted FIFA for not allowing England players to wear poppies on their shirts, despite permitting a poppy to be displayed on the armbands.

The governing body were forced to reconsider their ban on poppies sewn into the Three Lions' shirts after outrage from England.

Fabio Capello's side will now wear poppies on black armbands against Spain at Wembley this Saturday, as a mark of respect for the British armed forces.

"I suppose letting players wear them on armbands is something - but in a way it makes the whole situation even more ridiculous," The Sun quotes Redknapp as saying.

"If you can wear poppies on armbands, why not on the chest?

"It just sounds like FIFA is being picky to me now. And it's frightening when you have people like that running the game."

The peace offering was issued after Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince William expressed their dismay at the ban.
