Newport County grab late equaliser to draw with Scunthorpe United

Scunthorpe United miss the chance to go top of League Two after a 2-2 draw at Newport County.

Scunthorpe United missed the chance to leapfrog Chesterfield at the top of League Two after they conceded a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Newport County.

Dave Syers almost gave Scunthorpe a 12th-minute lead with a stooping header, but his effort was just too high.

A minute later, Ryan Burge saw his shot saved by Sam Slocombe at the other end.

The lively Burge continued to cause problems for Scunthorpe, but he should have done better than head over from six yards midway through the first half.

However, the home side did take the lead in the 25th minute when Lee Minshull forced the ball over the line after Slocombe could only punch a free kick into the midfielder's path.

The remainder of the first period saw no more chances created, but Rene Howe nearly extended Newport's lead when he bent a shot just wide of the far post two minutes after the restart.

However, just after the hour mark, Eddie Nolan managed to get to the byline before rolling the ball across the face of goal to leave Paddy Madden with the simple task of levelling the score with an easy finish from five yards.

Scunthorpe began to see more of the ball after their equaliser and got their rewards with seven minutes remaining.

Substitute Hakeeb Adelakun did well to work the ball into Syers, who kept his composure to finish from 15 yards.

It seemed as though Syers had taken the Iron to the top of the league, but Chris Zebroski netted from close range in the 90th minute to ensure that Newport took a share of the spoils.
