Late David Mirfin strike sends Scunthorpe United top

Scunthorpe move level on points with Chesterfield at the summit of League Two after recovering from a two-goal deficit to beat Accrington Stanley tonight.

Scunthorpe United have moved level on points with Chesterfield at the summit of the League Two table after recovering from a two-goal deficit to beat Accrington Stanley tonight.

Stanley started marginally the better of both sides and went ahead through Lee Molyneux, who availed of the wet conditions and slid home the opening goal on 18 minutes.

James Beattie's men established daylight in the scoreline on 36 minutes through Peter Murphy, whose effort from the edge of the area looped over Sam Slocombe courtesy of a deflection.

United should have at least halved the deficit minutes before half time, with Dave Syers heading into the arms of Marcus Bettinelli from close range before smashing into the side-netting from a good position soon after.

The visitors soon found their reward in the second half, Paddy Madden bursting through the heart of midfield before slipping in Sam Winnall, who kept his composure and slotted past Bettinelli.

Russ Wilcox's men completed the comeback 10 minutes later, as Hakeeb Adelakun smashed home from close range after the hosts failed to deal with a Marcus Williams cross.

Both goalscorers combined to almost devastating effect moments later, as the 17-year-old turned provider to set up Winnall, only for the marksman to see his fiercely-struck shot kept out by Bettinelli.

Only the width of the woodwork prevented the visitors from edging ahead in the contest, with Madden heading against the frame of the goal.

However, Mifrin was on hand in the closing stages to snatch the points for the visitors and bring an end to a run of five straight draws.
