Mike Williamson: 'Newcastle will target top six'

Mike Williamson believes Newcastle can continue their assault on the top-six and earn a European place.

Newcastle defender Mike Williamson is confident that his side can end the season in the top-six.

The Magpies have come through a run of poor form to continue their target of qualifying for Europe.

The club are currently in 7th place, just two points behind Liverpool. However, Williamson has said that he is keen to concentrate on his club's own games, starting with QPR on Sunday.

"It's a cliche, but we are taking every game as it comes," said the 28-year-old.

"For me personally, when you start getting carried away with targets and looking where we could finish, it just gets a bit too much.

"But we have just got an honest group and we know if we carry on working hard and applying ourselves in the way we do, we have got goals in the team and we have got a back four and a midfield which can keep clean sheets."

Williamson joined Newcastle from Portsmouth on a permanent deal in 2010 for an undisclosed fee.
