Alan Shearer says he is still "numb and shocked at the death of Gary Speed.

Alan Shearer has said that he is still "numb and shocked" at the tragic death of former teammate Gary Speed, who was found dead in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Shearer played alongside Speed for six years at Newcastle and was also in the BBC studio when the former Wales manager made his last public appearance on Saturday.

"I'm still numb and still shocked like everyone else is - you read things in the newspapers, but this doesn't happen to one of your best mates," said Shearer.

"I'm so sad and shocked and feel for Louise and his two boys and his parents. I can't imagine the pain they are going through".

The ex-England striker also revealed that he and Speed had discussed plans for the upcoming weekend.

"I was with him on Saturday afternoon, watching the Stoke Blackburn game, and was arranging next weekend. He was coming up with his wife to stay at my house," he said.

"I shook his hand and said see you next weekend. Unfortunately I won't."
