Steve McClaren: 'West Ham United defeat was a lesson'

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren says that his side were taught "a big lesson" in their defeat by West Ham United on Monday night.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has claimed that his side were taught "a big lesson" as they were beaten by West Ham United on Monday night.

The Magpies are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season after losing 2-0 to the Hammers at Upton Park.

The defeat leaves them bottom of the Premier League table, and McClaren has said that he is eager to put that right as soon as possible.

"I'm very disappointed and this is a big lesson," he told BBC Sport.

"These games hurt like mad, but you need them to get the message across and we need a reaction on Saturday."

Newcastle host Watford at St James' Park on Saturday.
