Preview: Mexico vs. Germany - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's friendly clash between Mexico and Germany, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Germany will be aiming to make it three victories in a row when they take on Mexico in an international friendly in the United States on Tuesday night.

The Euro 2024 hosts will enter the contest off the back of a 3-1 victory over the USA, while Mexico, who are co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, recorded a 2-0 win over Ghana in their last match.

Mexico, as mentioned, are co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and the United States, so they will not have to go through a qualification process for the competition.

The reigning CONCACAF Gold Cup champions found it difficult to make their mark at the 2022 World Cup, being knocked out in the group stage, and it proved to be their first time that they had failed to advance to the next round of the competition since 1978.

Jaime Lozano's side have played three friendlies since their Gold Cup success in July, drawing with Australia and Uzbekistan in September before recording a 2-0 win over Ghana on Saturday.

Hirving Lozano and Uriel Antuna scored the goals in the friendly success last time out, and El Tri will now be aiming to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches.

Mexico have faced Germany on 12 previous occasions and have only won twice, although they were victorious in the last game between the two nations, which came in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup.

Germany confirmed Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach towards the end of last month, and the 36-year-old made a winning start to his tenure on Saturday.

USA actually took the lead in the friendly in Connecticut, with Christian Pulisic making the breakthrough in the 27th minute, but Ilkay Gundogan levelled the scores in the 39th minute before Niclas Fullkrug and Jamal Musiala scored in the second period, with Germany running out 3-1 winners.

As hosts of Euro 2024, DFB-Team do not have to go through a qualification process, so they are currently being occupied by friendlies, with clashes against Turkey and Austria to also come next month.

Germany's last competitive match came at the 2022 World Cup, when they recorded a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica, but it was not enough for them to advance to the knockout round of the competition.

Die Mannschaft have now failed to progress through the group stage in the last two World Cups, but they have made the semi-finals in two of their last three European Championship tournaments and will be among the favourites for the competition next summer due to home advantage.

Team News

Mexico head coach Jaime Lozano will want to have another look at his squad on Tuesday against quality opposition, so there will be changes throughout the match, but a strong XI should again start.

Santiago Gimenez has been in excellent form for Feyenoord this season, scoring 12 goals and registering two assists in nine appearances, and the in-demand forward could come in to lead the line.

Raul Jimenez might be the player to drop down to the bench, while Antuna is also in line for a starting role, having scored following his second-half introduction against Ghana.

As for Germany, new head coach Nagelsmann will be looking to get the balance right between giving players opportunities and building a rhythm during the team's preparations for Euro 2024.

Julian Brandt could come into a wide area for DFB-Team, while it is likely that Niklas Sule will feature at the back, which could see Florian Wirtz and Mats Hummels drop down to the bench.

Leon Goretzka is also in line for a spot in the middle of midfield alongside Gundogan, but there will be no Joshua Kimmich again on Tuesday, with the midfielder unavailable for selection due to illness.

Mexico possible starting lineup:
Ochoa; J Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Arteaga; E Sanchez, Alvarez, Chavez; Lozano, Gimenez, Antuna

Germany possible starting lineup:
Ter Stegen; Tah, Sule, Rudiger, Gosens; Goretzka, Gundogan; Brandt, Musiala, Sane; Fullkrug

We say: Mexico 1-2 Germany

This will be a good test for both sides, and we are expecting Tuesday's contest to be extremely competitive. Mexico have players who can hurt Germany, and we are backing El Tri to score, but the Euro 2024 hosts should have enough quality to secure the win here.
