Manchester United identify Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde as a transfer target, according to a report.

Manchester United have reportedly identified Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde as a transfer target.

The 22-year-old has worked his way into the Madrid first team over the last three seasons and is now a key player for the capital giants, already featuring on five occasions in La Liga this term.

Valverde still has five years left to run on his contract at the Bernabeu, while there is believed to be a £640m release clause in his deal with Zinedine Zidane's side.

However, according to The Sun, United are keeping a close eye on the Uruguay international as the speculation surrounding Paul Pogba's future continues to gather pace.

Pogba recently said that he 'dreams' of joining Madrid, and the report claims that the Red Devils would be open to a swap deal involving Valverde, who has made 74 outings for Los Blancos in all competitions.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said last week that Pogba would be remaining at Old Trafford for the next two years, but there remains uncertainty surrounding the Frenchman, who was a second-half substitute in Saturday's 4-1 win over Newcastle United at St James' Park.
