England boss Sam Allardyce: 'Too early to say if Wayne Rooney will stay captain'

New England manager Sam Allardyce says that it is "too early" to say if Wayne Rooney will remain captain.

New England manager Sam Allardyce has claimed that it is "too early" to confirm whether or not Wayne Rooney will remain as captain.

Rooney was handed the armband by former Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson in 2014 after Steven Gerrard announced his international retirement following the team's failure at the World Cup in Brazil.

The 30-year-old, who is the nation's all-time leading goalscorer, was criticised for his performance during England's failed Euro 2016 campaign, which ended in the last-16 stage by minnows Iceland.

Allardyce has begun a new era with the national side after being appointed as Roy Hodgson's successor last week, but he has not yet made a decision about his captain.

When asked about Rooney's position as skipper, Allardyce told reporters: "It is far too early to make any predictions and will not make any decisions until I meet the players and coaching staff. It is my first day in and getting my feet under the table and meeting everyone."

Allardyce's first match in charge of England will reportedly be against Croatia in a friendly on September 1.
