Mile Jedinak began to pull the strings for the home side early on and played in Jason Puncheon, but the midfielder's right-footed attempted was blocked on its way to goal.
The hosts threatened again soon after when Barry Bannan picked up the ball, before turning an effort on goal, which was well kept out by Newcastle keeper Tim Krul.
Mathieu Debuchy nearly gave the visitors the lead with their first real chance of the game, but the full-back was not able to convert as his header, which flashed wide from six yards out.
However, the visitors soon found the lead in the 25th minute when Yohan Cabaye was given the ball by Moussa Sissoko, with the Frenchman's shot deflecting past the Palace keeper.
Palace attempted to pull themselves level in the 30th minute, but Cameron Jerome's effort was kept out from the left-hand corner of the goal by Krul.
The hosts then had themselves to blame as they conceded a second goal, with defender Daniel Gabbidon putting into his own net.
