Silvio Berlusconi's initial jail sentence of four years is reduced to just 12 months because of a 2006 Amnesty Law aimed at reducing overcrowding in prisons.

AC Milan owner and former Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's initial jail sentence of four years has been reduced to just 12 months because of an Amnesty Law.

The 76-year-old was found guilty of tax evasion on Friday and was handed a fine of €10m (£8m) along with the prison sentence.

However, a 2006 Amnesty Law aimed at reducing overcrowding in prisons has now seen Berlusconi's sentence reduced to a year.

The three-time Italy Prime Minister is expected to appeal the prison term and, according to the Italian law, the verdict will not be final until two cases of appeal are passed.
