Wolves transfer news: Mario Lemina apologises for conduct amid transfer interest

U-Turn: Pereira reveals Lemina talks, midfielder available for Chelsea game

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Mario Lemina reveals that midfielder Mario Lemina has apologised for his recent conduct amid interest in his signature.

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Mario Lemina has apologised to head coach Vitor Pereira for his recent conduct.

Since arriving at Molineux in January 2023, Lemina has largely proven to be an influential figure and was awarded the captaincy under previous manager Gary O'Neil.

However, in the space of six weeks, the Gabon international has been involved in a post-match on-pitch fracas with his own teammates and staff, as well as refuse to make himself available for selection for Wednesday's fixture at Newcastle United.

Lemina has been the subject of transfer interest from Al-Shabab, Wolves demanding in the region of £5m when the Saudi Pro League outfit have been pushing to acquire him on a free.

Ahead of Monday's Premier League fixture against Chelsea, Pereira has revealed that the 31-year-old has performed a U-turn on his previous stance and made an apology.

"We can commit mistakes in our lives"

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, the Portuguese suggested that he would provide Lemina with the opportunity to prove himself on the pitch, rather than with words.

As quoted by The Athletic, Pereira said: "He came to me this morning to apologise and to ask to apologise to the team. He said that he's ready to do his best for the team until we have a solution.

"That is the way he must behave because we are professional, the club pay salaries, and that means we should come here with the energy to help until the last day.

"We can commit mistakes in our life. I made some mistakes in my life and we must give him the opportunity to show in his acts, not with words. I believe that he spoke with his heart and he will try and I'm here to see if he can or not. If he can help, OK, if not I prefer to go with another one who is committed.

"Mario has quality. He can bring us physicality in the midfield and technical quality."

A short reprieve?

With Lemina's contract due to expire at the end of the season, Wolves cannot afford to take too firmer stance over an asking price.

Joao Gomes, Andre and Tommy Doyle are already options in the engine room, and parting ways with Lemina would free up space on the wage bill to acquire a suitable alternative.

Wolves are no strangers to conducting business with Al Shabab with Pereira having arrived from the Saudi club just last month.

All parties reaching a compromise appears to be the best solution with Lemina's stay at Molineux deserving to be viewed as a success with six goals and five assists coming from his 77 appearances in all competitions.
