Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson feels that his side are due some luck on the last day of the season after missing out on the Champions League twice in the past decade on the final day.

In 2006 members of the Spurs squad were struck down with food poisoning before their game with West Ham United which they subsequently failed to win and lost out on fourth place to Arsenal.

Last season Chelsea's Champions League win over Bayern Munich dropped Spurs into the Europa League despite them finishing in fourth place.

Dawson told The Sun: "I remember in 2006 we went from being in prime position to waking up and feeling the way we did. We couldn't believe it, knowing what was riding on it. It was an absolute disaster.

"Then there was the injustice last year. You can't believe it. We finished fourth and deserved to be in it. To miss out the way we did was amazing.

"Usually you want the English teams to do well but we were all cheering Bayern. It obviously wasn't meant to be. Maybe this year something bizarre will happen at Newcastle. We're due one!"

Tottenham face Sunderland at White Hart Lane later today, knowing that only a win will keep their Champions League qualification hopes alive.
