Preview: Rotherham United vs. Morecambe - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Rotherham United and Morecambe, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

League leaders Rotherham United will continue their promotion push when they play host to Morecambe on Tuesday.

The visitors, who are currently embroiled in a relegation battle, will look to end a five-match winless run when they make the midweek trip to the New York Stadium.

With nine points separating themselves from third-placed MK Dons, Rotherham are closing in on an immediate return to the Championship.

Although unbeaten in their last six league games, a run of five consecutive League One victories came to an end when the Millers faced title rivals Wigan Athletic in their most recent outing.

The Latics took a lead into half time thanks to Stephen Humphrys's opener, but a second-half strike from Oliver Rathbone ensured that Rotherham prolonged their unbeaten home run.

The Millers have avoided defeat in their previous 18 home encounters in all competitions, and they enter the midweek contest with the best home record in the third tier.

Boasting the best defensive in the league after conceding just 19 goals in League One, the hosts will be confident of keeping a seventh home league clean sheet of the season.

Morecambe enter the midweek contest in the relegation zone with one point separating them from safety.

Looking to avoid an immediate return to League Two, Morecambe will hope that they can end their current winless run sooner rather than later.

The Shrimps will enter the contest with a well-rested squad after Saturday's meeting with Shrewsbury Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

In their last league outing, Morecambe picked up a point after Jonathan Obika equalised to cancel out Ryan Jackson's opener to ensure that their contest with Gillingham ended level.

Having picked up just nine points from their 15 league away games this term, Morecambe may be pessimistic about their chances of a positive result against the league leaders on Tuesday.

Team News

The hosts will be without the injured duo of Mickel Miller and Rarmani Edmonds-Green.

Rathbone returned to the starting lineup for Friday's draw with Wigan, and after scoring the crucial equaliser, the 25-year-old is guaranteed to retain his place for Tuesday's contest.

Michael Smith has top-scored for the Millers this season with 17 league goals to his name, and he will look to add to that tally when he starts up front alongside Freddie Ladapo.

As for the visitors, Ryan McLaughlin and Jacob Mensah are still absent due to their respective injury problems.

Adam Phillips will retain his place in the Morecambe midfield after starting the last four games.

Obika made a positive impact as a second-half substitute in Morecambe's most recent fixture, and his equaliser against Gillingham may have earned him a starting berth for Tuesday's encounter.

Rotherham United possible starting lineup:
Vickers; Ihiekwe, Wood, Harding; Ogbene, Rathbone, Barlaser, Wiles, Ferguson; Smith Ladapo

Morecambe possible starting lineup:
Carson; Cooney, O'Connor, Bedeau, Leigh; Phillips, Diagouraga, S. McLoughlin; Obika, Ayunga, Stockton

We say: Rotherham United 3-1 Morecambe

Having won 11 of their 16 home league matches this season, we think that Rotherham will prevail on Tuesday, when they face a Morecambe side who tend to struggle on their travels, having won just two away league games this term.
