Kylian Mbappe scores a record-breaking 31st Champions League goal for Paris Saint-Germain in their 1-1 draw with Benfica in Group H.

Kylian Mbappe became Paris Saint-Germain's highest-scoring player in Champions League history as the capital side were held to another 1-1 draw by Benfica in Group H.

The 23-year-old scored his 31st goal in the competition for PSG from the penalty spot to give them the lead, but Joao Mario's own spot kick saw both sides remain unbeaten in the section.

Victory for either side would have sealed their place in the last-16 after Juventus' lowly defeat to Maccabi Haifa, but off-field talk dominated the pre-match build-up in Paris.

The French champions may have struggled to keep their focus on their on-field endeavours in Paris, as reports emerged of Mbappe allegedly wanting to leave the club in January amid a broken relationship with the club's board.

Clear-cut opportunities were few and far between in the opening exchanges, although Achraf Hakimi was thanking his lucky stars after the ball struck his elbow inside the area, but a VAR review did not lead to a penalty being awarded.

Fifteen minutes after that incident, a spot kick would go the way of PSG, as Antonio Silva hacked down Juan Bernat and Mbappe stepped up to convert the resulting penalty – his record-breaking 31st Champions League goal for Les Parisiens.

In stark contrast from the first half, chances were aplenty in the opening stages of the second period, as Mbappe could and probably should have made it 2-0 to the French champions, but his curling effort went just wide of the post.

The 23-year-old would be left to rue that missed chance, as Benfica were awarded a penalty of their own just after the hour mark when Marco Verratti brought down Rafa Silva, with Michael Oliver going to the screen before pointing to the spot – Mario made no mistake from 12 yards.

Only a win would do for the two unbeaten sides if they were to seal progress to the knockout rounds, and Mbappe had the ball in the back of the net for PSG again in the 86th minute, but his volley was ruled out for offside.

Christophe Galtier's side could not find the goal to seal a last-16 place in the final moments as they played out a second successive 1-1 draw with Benfica, whom they remain level on eight points with in the Group H standings.

PSG's superior goals scored keeps them top ahead of the visit of Maccabi Haifa on October 25, while Benfica host Juventus that same evening as the two sides seek to confirm their places in the last 16 on the penultimate matchday.
