Football League Trophy roundup: Leyton Orient eliminate Peterborough United

Leyton Orient knock holders Peterborough out of the Football League Trophy, while AFC Wimbledon triumph against the odds to beat Southend.

Leyton Orient dumped holders Peterborough United out of the Football League Trophy, while AFC Wimbledon secured their passage to the second round with a dramatic shootout victory over Southend United this evening.

Chris Dagnall scored twice as reigning champions Peterborough fell at the first hurdle in a feisty encounter at London Road.

The Orient hitman opened the scoring after four minutes, but Marcus Maddison hit back for the hosts on 15 minutes as the sides went in level at the break.

Dagnall started the second half with similar success, securing his double just two minutes after the restart before Bradley Pritchard added a degree of comfort to the scoreline shortly after the hour mark.

However, Romain Vincelot was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in as many minutes to reinvigorate Posh in their comeback quest.

Luke James did make it a nervy last few minutes for the Londoners, but Russell Slade's troops held on to eliminate the holders.

There was plenty of drama at Kingsmeadow, too, as Wimbledon defied a numerical disadvantage to beat Southend on penalties in an equally lively encounter.

Kevin Sainte-Luce cancelled out Jack Payne's early opener, but the Dons' bid to reach the second round was significantly dented when Harry Pell was dismissed on 20 minutes.

Neal Ardley's side initially coped well with the setback, but fell behind when Payne struck again six minutes into the second half.

Nevertheless, Adam Barrett pounced with an 88th-minute equaliser as the Dons forced penalties, before emerging from the shootout as 4-2 winners to seal their progression.

Last season's beaten finalists Chesterfield, meanwhile, went down 2-0 to Scunthorpe United.

First-half strikes from Sean McAllister and Gary McSheffrey proved enough for United to progress into the next stage.

Crewe Alexandra, who won the competition in 2013, will not claim a second title in three seasons as Steve Davis's side were thumped 3-0 at home to Rochdale.

Matt Done fired the visitors ahead three minutes before the break, before second-half strikes from Peter Vincenti and Calvin Andrew made sure of the victory.

Rochdale will be joined in the second round by Portsmouth, as a Jed Wallace-inspired Pompey beat Yeovil Town 3-1.

The League Two side brushed off a goalless first half and took the initiative, with Wallace scoring in the 55th and 74th minutes to help Portsmouth into a 2-0 lead.

Craig Westcarr put the result beyond doubt just moments later, while League One's Yeovil did restore a little pride late on through Nathan Ralph.

Elsewhere, Morecambe came from behind to seal their first-round win, beating Fleetwood Town 3-1 at Highbury.

It was going to plan when Gareth Evans fired the hosts into a 12th-minute lead, but Padraig Amond struck just before the half-hour mark to level matters.

Six minutes later Jack Redshaw bagged Morecambe's second, before Amond made sure of the win on 80 minutes to help Jim Bentley's side advance.
