Manchester United are set to announce a one-year contract for experienced defender Jonny Evans, according to a report.

Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of announcing that Jonny Evans has signed a contract with the club until the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

The Northern Ireland international started training with the Red Devils in July following his release from Leicester City at the end of June.

Evans signed a short-term deal to allow him to feature during pre-season, and the 35-year-old ultimately played four times for the 20-time English champions in friendlies.

Man United head coach Erik ten Hag recently confirmed that he wanted to keep Evans at Old Trafford, and the two parties have now allegedly come to an agreement.

According to The Athletic, the experienced centre-back is preparing to sign a one-year deal with the Red Devils, which will take him until June 2024.

The report claims that Evans could potentially be available for Sunday's Premier League clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium depending on when he is registered.

Harry Maguire is staying at Old Trafford on transfer deadline day, with the England international thought to be content to remain at the club despite his lack of action.

However, Raphael Varane is out for the next few weeks with a muscular problem, which is believed to have contributed to a final decision being made on Evans's future.

The experienced defender made 198 appearances during his first spell at Old Trafford between 2006 and 2015 before leaving for West Bromwich Albion.

A busy transfer deadline day has seen Man United confirm deals for Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who has joined on a permanent deal from Fenerbahce, and Sergio Reguilon, who has moved to the club on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Both players will be available for Sunday's clash against Arsenal, in addition to Rasmus Hojlund, who is set to make his first appearance for the club at the Emirates Stadium.

"It's one of the biggest games in the Premier League. We're really looking forward to that fight. They're always interesting games, intense games, I think it's two teams who really play offensive football with the right intentions I would say," said Ten Hag when discussing the clash in North London.

"The audience is always the big winner of that game, so we're really looking forward to that game."

Man United are also close to securing the signature of Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat on an initial loan deal from Italian giants Fiorentina.
