Manchester United attacker Alejandro Garnacho leaves Old Trafford on crutches after picking up an ankle injury against Southampton.

Manchester United attacker Alejandro Garnacho has been pictured leaving Old Trafford on crutches following his side's goalless draw with Southampton in the Premier League.

The 18-year-old was introduced as a late substitute against the Saints, but he was unable to finish the match due to an issue that he picked up in a challenge with Kyle Walker-Peters.

Garnacho initially attempted to continue but was eventually substituted late on, and he headed straight down the tunnel to begin receiving treatment.

Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag revealed after the match that the youngster had 'twisted his ankle'.

"Yes, he had a bad tackle. His ankle was twisted. I didn't take the risk and I took him off," he told MUTV when questioned on the possible extent of the damage.

Garnacho was pictured leaving Old Trafford in a protective boot and on crutches, although it is unclear whether the teenager could now be set for a spell on the sidelines.

The Argentina Under-20s international has been a regular for Man United during the 2022-23 campaign, featuring on 29 occasions in all competitions, contributing four goals and five assists in the process.

The Red Devils had Casemiro sent off in the clash with Southampton, and the hosts were unable to find a goal at Old Trafford, ultimately being forced to share the points with the strugglers.

Man United were without Victor Lindelof on Sunday afternoon through illness, while Anthony Martial, Christian Eriksen, Marcel Sabitzer and Donny van de Beek again missed out through injury.

Casemiro, meanwhile, will now serve a four-game domestic ban, starting with next weekend's FA Cup quarter-final with Fulham due to his red card for a heavy challenge on Carlos Alcaraz.

Man United goalkeeper David de Gea was asked about the decision after the clash at Old Trafford.

"Before the game, we wanted to win the three points but the game changed when Casemiro was sent off," De Gea told MUTV. "It was very tough but I think the team did well, we tried to defend and made some good chances to win the game.

"But in the end, we have to take the point. The team showed great spirit. We fought until the end and we could have lost the game, or won the game, but we showed good spirit. The tackle was a normal tackle, he touched the ball.

"But his leg went a bit higher and hit the player from Southampton. I think it was a bit unlucky, to be honest. We had to suffer a bit, we had to play 70 minutes with 10 players but we showed spirit and kept trying until the end.

"It's tough to lose Casemiro for four games. It's a lot but we have a big squad, everyone is ready to play. The players from the bench did an amazing job. Everyone is ready and the players who deserve to play in that position will play good. But of course, it's a big miss for us."

Man United will now not be back in Premier League action until April 2 away to Newcastle United.
