Atletico Madrid beat Juventus in bad-tempered clash

Atletico Madrid beat Juventus 1-0 in a bad-tempered Champions League Group A game at the Vicente Calderon.

Atletico Madrid have beaten Juventus 1-0 in a bad-tempered Champions League game that saw a multitude of clashes and eight bookings tonight at the Vicente Calderon.

The game saw drama in the opening stages, as Giorgio Chiellini and Mario Mandzukic had to be separated after squaring up to each other in the fourth minute.

In the 10th minute, Claudio Marchisio provided the first chance of the match after shooting from outside the box, but his effort flew wide of the post.

After some tentative skirmishes from both sides, Paul Pogba was able to find space on the edge of the Atletico box in the 34th minute before blasting an effort just wide of the post.

The half ended with tempers threatening to flare over as Pogba and Juanfran also clashed, but despite Juventus turning the screw in the final stages, neither side was able to break the deadlock in the first 45 minutes.

On the hour mark, the home side caused panic in the Juve box when a low cross by Arda Turan hit Mandzukic and bounced onto the arm of Martin Caceres, but Gianluigi Buffon was at hand to clear.

Diego Simeone's side eventually broke the deadlock in the 74th minute when Juanfran sent a low ball the way of Turan, who duly poked the ball home past the veteran Juve keeper to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

The visitors were unable to find a way back into the game and grew more and more frustrated as time ticked on, several of their players launching into rash challenges and clashing with their opponents to earn four yellow cards in the final few minutes of the match.

Juventus remain top of Group A on goal difference, with all four sides currently on three points.
