Arsene Wenger announces that Thomas Vermaelen will be Arsenal's new skipper with Mikel Arteta as vice-captain.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has announced that defender Thomas Vermaelen will take the captain's armband from Robin van Persie, while midfielder Mikel Arteta has been named as vice-captain.

Reports claimed yesterday that the Belgium international was due to be confirmed as Van Persie's successor due to the Dutchman's impending move to Manchester United.

Vermaelen, who has been with the Gunners since 2009, will hope to have a more consistent season with the North London club following a hampered campaign due to a host of injuries.

Meanwhile, Van Persie, who spent eight years at Arsenal, is expected to finalise his move to the former Premier League champions today after completing a medical last night.
