Preview: Wycombe Wanderers vs. Watford - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Championship fixture between Wycombe Wanderers and Watford, including predictions, team news and lineups.

Wycombe Wanderers host Watford on Tuesday night as they go in pursuit of their first points of the season, having endured seventh a loss on the bounce thanks to a 91st-minute free kick from Norwich City's Mario Vrancic.

Like Wycombe, Watford too conceded late on, as they dropped two points at home to promotion-chasing rivals Bournemouth.

Wycombe will have known the enormity of the task ahead of them at the beginning of the season but will have hoped for a better start than what they have experienced so far.

Their defensive frailties, which have seen them concede a Championship-high 15 goals so far, again let them down against Norwich as they conceded late on, having looked set to gain their first point of the season.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth is still hopeful that his side can avoid the drop despite looking desperately off the pace in the majority of games played this season, and he will hope to conjure an inspired home performance from his team on Tuesday night.

Following the visit of Watford, the Chairboys travel to the only team below them in the league this season, Sheffield Wednesday, in the hope of maintaining a gap between the two sides.

Watford come into this fixture unbeaten in their last three and will be hoping to secure their fifth win in eight games to keep pace with the league-leaders.

The Hornets will be disappointed not to have taken all three points at home to Bournemouth on the weekend, having conceded a Chris Mepham goal deep into added time.

That said, Bournemouth are one of the stronger outfits in the league and Watford will take heart from their performance, having controlled the game for longer periods.

Vladimir Ivic will have also been pleased to see recent signing Stipe Perica score his first goal for the club and will hope that it is the first of many given Watford have scored noticeably fewer than the teams around them.

Team News

Ainsworth opted to start David Wheeler and Fred Onyedinma against Norwich, as they replaced Matt Bloomfield and Alex Samuel.

To some extent, this paid off given the team's stoic performance, and he could choose to name the same side.

Uche Ikpeazu was fit enough for a place on the bench against the Canaries and could be considered for the starting lineup if deemed ready.

From Watford's perspective, they will be sweating on the fitness of Stipe Perica after he was withdrawn with an arm injury. He will now undergo a scan ahead of Tuesday night's fixture.

Perica aside, Vladimir Ivic will need to decide whether Etienne Capoue and Will Hughes are fit enough to be considered for the trip to Wycombe.

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Allsopp; Grimmer, Knight, Stewart, Jacobsen; Onyedinma, Thompson, Adeniran, Mehmeti; Kashket, Wheeler

Watford possible starting lineup:
Foster; Cathcart, Kabasele, Wilmot; Femenia, Garner, Capoue, Cleverley, Sema; Pedro, Sarr

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 0-2 Watford

Wycombe were admirable in the fight they showed against Norwich on the weekend but, for all of their efforts, their midweek fixture against Watford could end in the same outcome. We see Watford's class showing on the night, and fully expect them to complete a comfortable win.
