Preview: West Bromwich Albion vs. Burnley - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's Premier League clash between West Bromwich Albion and Burnley, including team news and predicted lineups.

Both West Bromwich Albion and Burnley will be desperate to pick up a positive result when they lock horns at the Hawthorns in the Premier League on Monday evening.

West Brom are 17th in the table with just a single point from their four matches, while Burnley have lost all three of their league games this term and currently occupy 18th.

One point from four matches represents a poor start to the season for West Brom, who suffered a 2-0 defeat at Southampton in their last encounter before the international break.

The Baggies did claim a point against Chelsea at the end of September but have also lost to Leicester City and Everton this term and are currently just outside the relegation zone in England's top flight.

Slaven Bilic's side will view their next three games as hugely important, starting with Burnley on Monday before facing Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham before hosting Tottenham Hotspur on November 7.

West Brom suffered a 2-1 defeat to Burnley when the two teams last locked horns in the Premier League during the 2017-18 campaign, but the Baggies have won three of their last six encounters, losing just once.

The club's supporters will not be panicking at this stage of the season, but the fact that the promoted side have already conceded a league-high 13 goals will be a concern.

Burnley, meanwhile, have also had a poor start to the campaign, losing each of their three Premier League matches to Leicester, Southampton and Newcastle United to sit 18th in the table.

The Clarets will face Tottenham and Chelsea in their two matches after this one, meaning that it is vitally important for the team to pick up a positive result at the Hawthorns.

Burnley have finished 16th, seventh, 15th and 10th in the Premier League since being promoted at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, but there is a fear that they could be in for a serious battle to stay in the league this term.

Sean Dyche's team were not particularly active during the summer transfer window, while they have had a number of injury problems in the early stages of the campaign.

There will again be huge pressure on Chris Wood to score the goals this season, but the club managed to retain the services of key defender James Tarkowski, who was linked with West Ham United over the summer.

Team News

West Brom will again be without the services of Hal Robson-Kanu as the Wales international recovers from wrist surgery, while Callum Robinson could be absent due to coronavirus guidelines.

The Baggies only signed Karlan Grant from from Huddersfield Town on Thursday, but the 23-year-old could come straight into the starting XI for his debut here.

Kieran Gibbs is also available after a suspension, while Branislav Ivanovic and Ahmed Hegazi are both fit, handing Bilic plenty of options in a defensive area.

As for Burnley, Jay Rodriguez is expected to return after missing three games with an ankle issue, while Johann Berg Gudmundsson should be available despite picking up a slight groin issue on international duty.

Ben Mee, Matthew Lowton and Jack Cork remain sidelined, but Kevin Long should be available after a eye problem and is expected to continue at the heart of the defence alongside Tarkowski.

Dwight McNeil and Robbie Brady could be handed starts in the wide positions, while fit-again Rodriguez is likely to get the nod over Ashley Barnes alongside Wood as part of a front two.

West Bromwich Albion possible starting lineup:
Johnstone; O'Shea, Bartley, Ajayi, Gibbs; Livermore, Sawyers, Gallagher; Pereira, Grant, Diangana

Burnley possible starting lineup:
Pope; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Long, Taylor; Brady, Brownhill, Westwood, McNeil; Wood, Rodriguez

SM words green background

We say: West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Burnley

There has been some incredibly high-scoring games in the Premier League this season, but we are not expecting this match to follow suit. Both managers will be desperate not to lose, which could create a cagey affair, and we are backing a low-scoring draw at the Hawthorns.
