Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd send USA through to World Cup quarter-finals

Second-half goals from Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd send USA Women through to the World Cup quarter-finals with victory against Colombia Women.

USA are through to the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup thanks to a 2-0 win over Colombia.

USA started on top and forced second-choice Colombian goalkeeper Catalina Perez into a low save, before Meghan Klindenberg fired a free kick marginally wide of the left-hand post.

However, they struggled to create chances throughout the rest of the half, while Colombia seemed happy to sit back and defend.

In the second period, their hard work was undone as Perez was shown a straight red card for taking down Alex Morgan in the box. However, Abby Wambach missed the spot kick as she pulled it wide.

USA didn't have to wait for the breakthrough though, as Morgan powered an effort into the corner four minutes later.

They wrapped victory up in the 66th minute after they were handed a second penalty for a foul on Megan Rapinoe, and Carli Lloyd buried the chance with aplomb.

The USA will play China in the next round.
