Preview: Swansea City vs. Coventry City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday's Championship clash between Swansea City and Coventry City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Swansea City will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run to three matches when they welcome Coventry City to the Liberty Stadium on Friday afternoon in the Championship.

The Swans secured a dramatic victory over arch rivals Cardiff City last time out, whilst the Sky Blues' playoff dreams took a significant blow at home to Stoke City.

Swansea's faltering campaign has enjoyed a mini revival over the past three weeks, with back-to-back wins for the Welsh club all but securing their second-tier status for next term.

Russell Martin's men had a Derby Day to remember on Saturday against the Bluebirds of Cardiff, with a 99th-minute winner from defender Ben Cabango sending the travelling Swansea supporters into delirium at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Couple that win with a 2-0 success over Bristol City just before the international break and the Swans have enjoyed a productive last month, with the club having won more matches in their last two games than they had in their previous 10.

Sitting 15th in the Championship standings and 10 points ahead of the relegation zone, another maximum on Friday would surely seal Swansea's safety this season - Martin will be hoping his charges can get their survival business done sooner rather than later in the remaining seven games.

The Swans have been prolific at the Liberty Stadium so far this season, having netted 30 goals in 19 fixtures, with only Burnley, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough managing more in front of their respective home faithful.

Coventry's impressive nine-game unbeaten run in the Championship came to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon as they lost 4-0 at a packed-out CBS Arena to Alex Neil's resurgent Stoke side.

Goals from Jacob Brown, Tyrese Campbell, William Smallbone and Ki-Jana Hoever saw the Sky Blues swept away on their own patch, with the Midlands club's last home loss coming all the way back in January.

Last weekend presented a real opportunity for Coventry to edge even closer to the top-six positions considering Blackburn Rovers, Millwall and Norwich City all failed to record maximums - a chance that Mark Robins's men were unable to take.

The Sky Blues are currently eighth in the second-tier standings with seven matches left to play, four points behind the aforementioned Blackburn in sixth place - although they are only three points better off than 12th-placed Sunderland.

Viktor Gyokeres has been the standout performer for Coventry this term having scored 18 goals in the league, and the Swede will be desperate to perform well against a club who did not take full advantage of his potential during a loan spell in the 2020-21 campaign.

Team News

Swansea will be without first-choice goalkeeper Steven Benda for the remainder of the campaign following a serious cruciate ligament injury in January, with Andy Fisher set to deputise once again in this one.

Luke Cundle was substituted at half time in the win at Cardiff last time out and could be dropped for this match, with Jay Fulton potentially partnering Matt Grimes and Liam Walsh in the Swans midfield.

Coventry could make some changes after their disappointing defeat to Stoke on Saturday, with Michael Rose a possible replacement for Kyle McFadzean in the centre of the hosts' back three.

Jamie Allen could return to the Sky Blues side in this match after stepping up his recovery from a calf injury - the midfielder may join Gustavo Hamer and Ben Sheaf in the Coventry engine room.

Matt Godden and Tyler Walker will fight for the right to partner sharpshooter Gyokeres in a two-man forward line - the Swede has scored nearly 40% of his side's goals this season.

Swansea City possible starting lineup:
Fisher; Darling, Cabango, Wood, Manning; Grimes, Fulton, Walsh; Ntcham, Cullen, Piroe

Coventry City possible starting lineup:
Wilson; McNally, McFadzean, Doyle; Norton-Cuffy, Sheaf, Hamer, Bidwell, Allen; Walker, Gyokeres

We say: Swansea City 1-2 Coventry City

Swansea have enjoyed an eventful last two games and now face a visit from a Sky Blues side who need to win in order to stay in the fight for promotion.

Coventry's playoff hopes were kept alive by results elsewhere following their heavy defeat to Stoke on Saturday, and Robins will know his men cannot afford another loss on Friday.
